Sheikhzayedroad gains biggest career win
26 July 2014
Sheikhzayedroad recorded the biggest win of his career when landing the Group 2 York Stakes this afternoon.
The five-year-old has been such a progressive horse and produced a gutsy display to score in the extended mile and a quarter race.
Jockey Martin Lane dropped out the 7/1 shot through the opening strides at York, content just to bide his time.
Sheikhzayedroad was gradually allowed to take closer order by Lane, who got his mount organised for a concerted challenge down the lengthy home straight on the Knavesmire.
On the front end Secret Gesture and Windhoek looked to be fighting for major honours but they hadn’t banked on trainer David Simcock’s charge.
The brave Sheikhzayedroad was delivered on the far side of his two rivals and arrived on the scene late on. He stayed on strongest of all and got up on the line to triumph by a neck.
It was a seventh career success for Sheikhzayedroad and comes hot on the heels of his Listed win over a mile and a half at Newmarket last time.
