TRAINER David Simcock enjoyed the greatest day of his training career when saddling two Grade 1 winners on the same card at Woodbine last night.
Sheikhzayedroad and Trade Storm were both victorious on what was a historic occasion for the Trillium Place team.
Before he flew to Canada, David outlined that he was expecting a bold show from his charges and they duly delivered!
Surely, though, only in his dreams could he have imagined what occurred in North America yesterday.
The ultra-progressive Sheikhzayedroad completed a three-timer with victory in the Northern Dancer Stakes – but not before connections had to endure a stewards’ enquiry.
He powered down the inner rail for jockey Martin Lane to grab the lead inside the final furlong of the mile and a half contest.
In control of the race, Sheikhzayedroad then edged right, in front of the eventual third Reporting Star, whose connections lodged an objection.
After a delay, the result – a half-length success for Sheikhzayedroad – stood and Trillium Place could celebrate its first top-class victory of the season.
It wasn’t long, though, before they were enjoying another. Seemingly, Grade 1 victories are like London buses – you wait a while for one to appear and then two come at once...thanks to stable favourite Trade Storm.
The six-year-old came with a devastating late charge in the hands of jockey Jamie Spencer to emerge successful from the Woodbine Mile – a race in which he finished third in last year.
Trade Storm returned to the winner’s circle for the first time in 18 months and what a race to do it in. He landed the £555,000 encounter by half a length from Kaigun.
It completed a mind-blowing night for David and Jennie – and all the team at Trillium Place. What a double!
