GLASS Office served up a 40/1 surprise in landing the Group 2 Duke of York Stakes at York this afternoon.
The five-year-old has always been a talented performer but was off the track for all of last turf season in Britain after suffering an injury.
He made his return in the Palace House Stakes a week and a half ago, finishing seventh over the minimum trip that day.
But the outing at Newmarket clearly sharpened him up for the Knavesmire assignment – and the extra furlong was going to be in his favour, too.
As it transpired, Glass Office needed every yard of the six furlongs and he ended up showing a thrilling burst of speed.
The Trillium Place runner came charging through the field in the hands of jockey Jim Crowley and succeeded in getting up just before the line. Stable-mate Caspar Netscher also ran a blinder, finishing fourth.
Both horses will now be pointed at the big Group 1 sprints with the Golden Jubilee Stakes at Ascot as the next likely port of call.
“It is very pleasing and satisfying,” was trainer David Simcock’s verdict on Glass Office’s triumph. “He is entitled to come on again for that.
“The track really suited him – flat and even. He has got a low action and would not want it soft.”
