Algometer victorious in Group 3 at Newbury
17 September 2016
THE golden run of trainer David Simcock's string in Group races continued this afternoon with Algometer scoring in the Legacy Cup Stakes (formerly known as thre Arc Trial) at Newbury.
Kirsten Rausing's three-year-old has not been seen since finishing a respectable seventh in the Derby at Epsom in early June.
But the grey colt made a triumphant return in the mile-and-three-furlong Group 3, taking a notable scalp or two in the process.
Jockey Jim Crowley had the son of Archipenko in the right place throughout, launching him with a decisive challenge from three furlongs out.
Algometer, an 11/4 shot, hit the front approaching the final furlong and
– despite veering left late on
– had three parts of a length in hand at the line from the runner-up Dartmouth.
It was his third career success
– his second in stakes company. Trillium Place have recorded three Group-race successes in the last eight days with Sheikhzayedroad and Breton Rock also on target (both in Group 2s).
