Sheikhzayedroad motors to Epsom triumph

01 June 2013

SHEIKHZAYEDROAD provided the Trillium Place team with their second win of the Investec Derby Meeting when taking the 1m4f handicap on Saturday afternoon.

The four-year-old, trained by David Simcock, relished the step up in trip, having been campaigned at up to a mile and a quarter before his latest assignment.

Mohammed Jaber’s gelding, a 5/1 chance, was given a good ride by jockey Martin Lane who settled him at the rear of the field during the early stages.

He switched wide into the straight to make his run but Sheikhzayedroad edged back down the camber towards the inside rail.

Even so, the momentum was with Sheikhzayedroad and he was gaining on the leaders with every stride.

Sure enough, he struck the front inside the final furlong and stayed on strongly to win by three and a quarter lengths.

Lane said: "It was his first time stepping up and he switched off lovely. I think that he can step up again and hopefully he might just sneak into Royal Ascot after that run."

The win came just 24 hours after Vainglory was successful at the same venue on Oaks days.
